Manchester, England, became known as "Cottonopolis" because of its large number of textile factories. This 1840 engraving by Edward Goodall (1795-1870), Manchester, from Kersal Moor, is based on a painting by W. Wylde. A strong contrast is painted between the lush, natural scenery of the countryside, and the polluted, chimney-riddled sky of the industrialized city.
