Adolf Hitler in the Reichstag, 1938

Hitler in the German Reichstag in 1938

Adolf Hitler accepts the ovation of the German Reichstag after announcing the 'peaceful' acquisition of Austria (the Anschluss).  This action set the stage to annex the Czechoslovakian Sudetenland, inhabited largely by a German-speaking population.  Photograph taken in Berlin, Germany, in March of 1938.  Adolf Hitler was himself born in Austria under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Notice the Nazi Party emblems powerfully displayed in the chamber.  As a rule-of-thumb, the display of a single political party's emblems in an allegedly democratic space (such as in a senate or parliamentary chamber) indicates that not only is the party on display in charge, but that any other parties (if they are permitted to exist) have no voice.
