The Dance of Death (1493)

This picture is of the Dance of Death, attributed to German artist Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519, Nürnberg/Nuremberg).  It was first published in Folio CCLXI Recto of Hartman Schedel's Chronicle of the World.  Reanimated and even lively skeletons were a frequent medieval artistic motif when dealing with the subject of the Black Death or Bubonic Plague, which struck Europe in 1347.  Click here to see more images in our gallery of the European Middle Ages.
