Louisiana Purchase, 1803.  Signed on 1803, the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the young United States.  President Thomas Jefferson bought this area west of the Mississippi River, approximately 828,000 square miles, from France (then ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte) for $15,000,000 (around four cents per acre).
