Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 on the French island of Corsica, located in the Mediterranean Sea southeast of mainland France.

Napoleon gained a reputation as a successful military commander under the French revolutionary government.


An ambitious man, Napoleon seized power in France through a coup d'etat in 1799. 


This coup d'etat officially marks the end of the ten-year period (1789-1799) known as the French Revolution, and begins the Napoleonic Era (1799-1815).

Under Napoleon, the French were virtually unbeatable on land.

However, on the sea, the British were superior.

Napoleon Bonaparte changed the map of Europe forever.  He tumbled monarchies, and brought the spirit of the French Revolution---an end to the Old Regime--to those areas he conquered.  Europe would never be the same--nor would many of the European colonies in the Americas.

The monarchies in places like Spain never fully regained power, despite the ultimate defeat of Napoleon.

The Portuguese monarchy actually relocated to Brazil in order to protect itself.

The European peasants and bourgeoisie conquered by Napoleon may not have enjoyed being conquered, but they did like the more liberal laws that he enacted.

Once given their rights, these people were loathe to relinquish them.

Napoleon is considered to have been one of the greatest generals of all time.  His legacy is immense.
