Guide for High School Students

MORE INFO ON ELECTIVES

Here's the inside scoop on choosing high school course electives.

What exactly are electives?
Electives are classes that you "elect" to take even though they are not required.  This might seem confusing because your school probably says that you are required to take a certain number of electives.  The key is that you pick which electives you take.

What electives should I take?
To get into college, you need to take at least two years of art and/or music.
It is irrelevant to colleges’ offices of admission whether you've taken four years of band or a different music course each year. Really, it is fine to take electives which are "all over the place." The point of electives is to round out the student’s education and illustrate that he or she has a range of interests.
Don't be scared to take an elective that seems out of the ordinary.  Check out your school's vocational programs.  In a college entrance interview, you could even use the experience to show that you enjoy learning new things and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty.  For example: "I look forward to earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from this university.  As you can see, I've taken the required college prep courses in Science and Math.  I also took a year of Auto Shop to get hands-on experience on how electrical systems help power and run cars.  Of course, now my parents expect me to change the oil in the family car every three months."
Another thing to consider when choosing high school electives is how the course might help you. Can you type? College courses (and many jobs) require a lot of typing. If you cannot type well, a basic typing/word-processing course might be a good idea. What are you interested in for college? If you think you might go for a business degree, take electives in economics and office skills.

What's the point of electives?
Electives give you a chance to take classes, outside of the norm, that interest you.  The electives you take give colleges a chance to see that you have a wide variety of interests, and what those interests are.

What about study hall?
Take a study hall only if you absolutely, positively, 100% need the time to study.  Otherwise, a study hall is a waste of time.  Take another class instead.
