For an interesting story on slavery and the slave trade outside of the Americas, check out the UNESCO webpage on Tromelin, a remote island in the Indian Ocean near Mauritius (off the eastern coast of Africa).  The story of a 1700s French shipwreck and abandoned slaves on this then-deserted island is fascinating for students (and adults).
