The Statue of Liberty, an iconic symbol of freedom and democracy, stands proudly on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Gifted to the United States by France in 1886 to commemorate the centennial of American independence, it represents the enduring friendship between the two nations. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with structural engineering by Gustave Eiffel, the statue stands 305 feet tall from the ground to the tip of the torch.
Lady Liberty holds a torch in her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment, and a tablet in her left hand inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. At her feet lies a broken chain, representing the abolition of slavery and the pursuit of freedom.
The statue has become a welcoming symbol for immigrants arriving by sea, epitomizing hope and the promise of a better future. It was designated a National Monument in 1924 and continues to be a powerful representation of American ideals and a beacon of liberty worldwide. Visitors from around the globe come to witness this majestic monument, reflecting on its historical and cultural significance.
