Regarding page 8: Turning an unproductive pursuit or purchase into a productive one means doing exactly that, as opposed to justifying something. Playing cards is largely unproductive, unless it's done, for example, while visiting the elderly in a nursing home. Buying candy in bulk to resell at a profit is likewise productive.
