Learning about Mozambique's geography is pivotal because it helps K-12 students understand how a long coastline and major rivers shape a nation's economy and culture. Mozambique sits on the southeast coast of Africa, bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Eswatini, with a long coastline on the Indian Ocean. The country's coastline stretches over 1,500 miles, providing ports that serve inland neighbors. The Zambezi River flows through the center, and Lake Niassa, also called Lake Malawi, lies along the western border.
Studying Mozambique builds key geographic skills. Your students can explore how coastal location supports fishing, trade, and tourism, and how rivers provide transportation and hydroelectric power. They can also learn how Mozambique's climate ranges from tropical in the north to drier savanna in the south, affecting farming of cashews, cotton, and sugar. The country's coral reefs and national parks protect wildlife like elephants and dugongs.
The country's cultural geography is rich, with groups like the Makhuwa, Tsonga, and Sena speaking many languages alongside Portuguese. Mozambique's history includes a long civil war that ended in 1992, showing how geography and conflict connect. For your younger learners, Mozambique is memorable because of its beaches, coral reefs, and resilient people. Studying it builds map skills, cultural awareness, and understanding of how geography shapes a nation's recovery and growth.
