Learning about Bhutan's geography is helpful because it shows K-12 students how mountains, forests, and national values can shape a country's identity. Bhutan is a small, landlocked country in South Asia, tucked in the eastern Himalayas between India and China. It has no coastline, so trade depends on its neighbors. The landscape rises from subtropical plains in the south to towering peaks in the north, including Gangkhar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. Deep valleys and fast rivers cut through the mountains, and forests cover much of the land.
Studying Bhutan builds key geographic skills. Students can explore how elevation creates many climates, from humid jungles to snowy peaks, and how that variety supports rich biodiversity. They can also learn how Bhutan protects its environment, with a constitution requiring at least sixty percent forest cover. The country is famous for measuring progress through Gross National Happiness rather than only money, showing how geography and culture connect.
The country's cultural geography is rich, with Buddhist traditions, colorful festivals, and dzongs, or fortress monasteries. For young learners, Bhutan is memorable because of its mountains, tigers, and happiness goals. Studying it builds map skills, cultural awareness, and understanding of how geography shapes a nation's values and way of life.
