Learning about Brunei's geography is beneficial because it shows K-12 students how a tiny, oil-rich country on a tropical island can thrive through its location and resources. Brunei sits on the northern coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by Malaysia and faces the South China Sea. The country is small but divided into two parts by a Malaysian region called Limbang. Most people live along the coast and near the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, while the interior is covered by rainforest.
Studying Brunei builds key geographic skills. Students can explore how a tropical climate and rainforests shape daily life, and how the country's oil and natural gas reserves make it wealthy. They can also learn how Brunei uses its wealth to fund free education and healthcare, showing how geography connects to economics. The South China Sea is important for shipping and fishing, linking Brunei to global trade.
The country's cultural geography is rich, with Malay traditions, Islam, and a unique sultanate government. For young learners, Brunei is memorable because of its water villages, rainforests, and golden mosques. Studying it builds map skills, cultural awareness, and understanding of how geography shapes a small nation's economy and identity in Southeast Asia.
