Donald J. Trump, born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York, is a businessman, television personality, and politician who served as the 45th President of the United States from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021, and started his second term in January of 2025. Before his political career, Trump was primarily known for his real estate ventures and his role as the host of the reality TV show The Apprentice. ![]() In 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency as a Republican, running on a platform that emphasized immigration reform, economic nationalism, and a pledge to "Make America Great Again." His campaign was marked by controversial statements, a strong anti-establishment stance, and a heavy use of social media to engage with supporters and bypass traditional media channels. Despite initial skepticism, Trump won the Republican nomination and defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Trump's presidency is characterized by significant policy shifts and a highly polarized political climate. Domestically, he has implemented substantial tax cuts for high earners, deregulation, and a conservative judicial agenda, including the appointment of three Supreme Court justices. His administration's handling of immigration, including the construction of a border wall, enhanced ICE apprehension tactics, and a travel ban targeting several predominantly Muslim countries, have sparked significant debate and legal challenges. In foreign policy, Trump has pursued an "America First" approach, renegotiating trade deals, withdrawing from international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord, and engaging in direct diplomacy with North Korea. His administration also brokered the Abraham Accords, leading to normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Trump's presidency faces numerous controversies and investigations, including impeachment by the House of Representatives in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, related to his dealings with Ukraine. He was acquitted by the Senate. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant challenge his final year in office during his first term, with criticism over his administration's response. The 2020 presidential election saw Trump defeated by Democrat Joe Biden. Trump's refusal to concede and claims of widespread election fraud led to the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, by his supporters, resulting in a second impeachment for incitement of insurrection. He was acquitted again by the Senate. Nonetheless, he was able to defeat Democratic candidate (and vice president under Biden) Kamala Harris for the presidency in the 2024 presidential election. Donald Trump's impact on American politics and society is profound and continues to be the subject of extensive analysis and debate. His tenure is reshaping the Republican Party and leaving a lasting legacy on the nation's political landscape. |
