- Yankees: Term for Union soldiers and Northerners; fought to preserve the United States and end slavery during the Civil War.
- Confederates: Southern soldiers and civilians who seceded from the Union, fighting to establish an independent slaveholding republic.
- Abraham Lincoln: 16th U.S. president who led the Union, issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and was assassinated in 1865.
- Jefferson Davis: President of the Confederate States of America; struggled to unify the South and manage its war effort against the Union.
- William Sherman: Union general known for his "March to the Sea," destroying Southern infrastructure to break Confederate morale.
- Robert E. Lee: Commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia; respected strategist who ultimately surrendered to Grant at Appomattox.
