Ghana's independence in 1957, led by Kwame Nkrumah, was the first sub-Saharan country to break free from colonial rule, inspiring others across Africa. The Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962) was a brutal conflict that ended over 130 years of French rule, symbolizing the fierce resistance to colonialism. In 1960, often called the "Year of Africa," 17 African nations gained independence, many from French and Belgian control. Kenya's Mau Mau Uprising (1952-1960) challenged British colonialism and led to eventual independence in 1963. The Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1974) led to independence movements in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau. Finally, South Africa's transition from apartheid (1990-1994), while not decolonization in the traditional sense, marked the end of internal colonial structures and white minority rule. These events highlighted African agency, resistance, and the complex legacies of imperialism. |
