Answer each of the following questions using complete sentences.

1. What contributions did Jews make to medieval European societies?

Jews made significant contributions to medieval European societies in fields like medicine, finance, trade, and scholarship. Many served as physicians, advisors, and moneylenders, roles often restricted to them due to Christian laws. Jewish communities also helped preserve and transmit classical knowledge through translation and education. Despite facing persecution and restrictions, Jews played a vital part in the cultural and economic life of medieval Europe.

2. Why were Jews persecuted in medieval Europe?

Jews were persecuted in medieval Europe due to religious intolerance, economic resentment, and widespread prejudice. Accusations of deicide, or the killing of Christ, fueled anti-Jewish sentiment among Christians. Economic roles such as moneylending, which Christians were often prohibited from, made Jews targets of envy. During times of crisis, like plagues or wars, Jews were scapegoated and blamed, leading to violence, expulsions, and forced conversions.

3. Describe an example of anti-Semitism in Europe during the Middle Ages.

One example of anti-Semitism in medieval Europe occurred during the Black Death (1347-1351), when Jews were falsely accused of poisoning wells to spread the plague. These accusations led to brutal pogroms, especially in Germany and Switzerland, where thousands of Jews were tortured and killed. Entire communities were burned or expelled, despite the lack of evidence and the Church's occasional efforts to stop the violence.
