The death of Socrates.  From a modern painting.  The philosopher is awaiting the cup of hemlock poison which is to bring about his death.  With him are friends, including Plato and his pupil Crito. In Greek: Σωκράτης.  Socrates was born in Greece circa 470 BCE.  He died in Athens in 399 BCE.
