Canceled check for the purchase of Alaska from Russia, 1868. Referred to as "Seward's Folly," William Seward, on behalf of the United States, bought Alaska on August 1, 1868, for $7,200,000.00. This was less than two cents per acre. Alaska, which eventually became the 49th state in the Union, measures nearly 600,000 square miles. |
