American Howitzer in Action During World War II

In this photograph, American howitzers are seen shelling German forces that are retreating near Carentan, France. Photo taken by Franklin on July 11, 1944 (World War II). Click here to enlarge.

American howitzers provided the essential backbone of U.S. artillery doctrine, delivering flexible and devastating indirect firepower. The workhorse was the 105mm M2A1 howitzer, which equipped divisional artillery battalions. Its mobility, rapid rate of fire, and wide range of ammunition made it ideal for supporting infantry advances and breaking up enemy assaults. For heavier bombardment, the 155mm "Long Tom" and massive 240mm howitzer destroyed fortifications and counter-battery targets. This graduated system of calibers allowed for coordinated barrages that could smother enemy positions. The sheer volume of shells fired—guided by forward observers and increasingly precise techniques—was a defining characteristic of American combined arms, crushing enemy morale and paving the way for Allied advances across every theater.
