1. Illustrate how and why domestic issues dominated the national agenda after the Cold War.

With the Soviet Union's collapse, the unifying foreign threat vanished. Public and political focus shifted inward to pressing domestic issues like healthcare reform, the federal budget deficit, and a struggling economy, which became the central themes of the 1992 presidential election.

2. Describe the defining political events of Bill Clinton's presidency.

Clinton's presidency was defined by centrist "Third Way" politics, including welfare reform and NAFTA. Domestically, it saw economic expansion and budget surpluses, but was permanently marred by his impeachment following the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

3. Describe Newt Gingrich and his role in national politics.

As Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich was the architect of the 1994 "Republican Revolution," ending 40 years of Democratic control. He engineered confrontational politics, leading to budget shutdowns with Clinton, and was a key figure in the president's impeachment before resigning in disgrace.

4. Summarize U.S. involvement in the Balkans.

Clinton led NATO's 1999 bombing campaign against Serbia to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, a conflict that occurred without explicit UN authorization. This intervention, aimed at preventing genocide, ultimately resulted in the establishment of a UN protectorate in the region.

5. Analyze the acts of terrorism which occurred during Clinton's presidency, such as the bombings of the World Trade Center, U.S.S. Cole, and federal building in Oklahoma City. Do you believe that the responses to these events were adequate? In hindsight, what might have been done differently?

Clinton's presidency saw the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1995 Oklahoma City attack, and the 2000 U.S.S. Cole bombing. Responses were law-enforcement oriented, treating them as crimes. In hindsight, a failure to connect these as part of a growing global jihad, specifically against Al-Qaeda, was a critical shortcoming.
