Labor Day celebrates the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement. It honors the social and economic accomplishments of workers, which have historically included advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable work hours that define the modern standard of living. How did it become a holiday? The holiday originated from the organized labor movements of the late 19th century. Following strikes and unrest advocating for workers' rights, it was first promoted by trade unions. In 1894, amid the Pullman Strike and to ease tensions, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law as a federal holiday. When is it celebrated? Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. This creates a long weekend that traditionally marks the end of the summer season for many Americans, though its official purpose is to honor the labor force. |
