Teaching about the British Virgin Islands is highly beneficial because it shows K-12 students how a small group of Caribbean islands can use its geography to build a tourism and finance economy.
The British Virgin Islands, or B.V.I., is a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean, part of the Virgin Islands chain. It includes about sixty islands, but only a few are inhabited, including Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. The islands are volcanic and coral in origin, with rugged hills, white-sand beaches, and coral reefs. The climate is tropical, with warm weather year-round and a hurricane season from June to November.
Studying the B.V.I. builds key geographic skills. Students can explore how volcanic and coral islands form differently, and how the surrounding reefs and clear waters support diving and sailing tourism. They can also learn how the islands' location near the United States Virgin Islands shapes trade and travel. Tourism and offshore finance drive the economy, while fishing remains important on smaller islands. Hurricanes, like Irma in 2017, show how geography links to natural hazards.
The islands' cultural geography blends African, British, and Caribbean influences, seen in its language, music, and festivals. For young learners, the B.V.I. is memorable because of its beaches, reefs, and sailing culture. Studying it builds map skills, cultural awareness, and understanding of how geography shapes small island economies and identities in the Caribbean.
