The term "Latin America" is here defined as "those countries south of the United States, located in North America and South America, which were colonized primarily by Spain and Portugal, as well as the countries of the Caribbean." Hence, Mexico, located on North America, is here classified as part of Latin America.
This distinction is made to facilitate organizing units within a World Geography course. Of course, teachers are free to divide the globe any way they see fit, when designing a course.
Learning about the geography of Latin America is essential for your K-12 students because it builds global awareness and cultural understanding. This region, encompassing Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, is deeply interconnected with the United States through trade, immigration, and environmental systems. By studying its diverse landscapes––from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes Mountains––your K-12 students grasp how physical features influence climate, agriculture, and settlement patterns.
Geography also illuminates critical issues like deforestation, natural disasters, and urbanization.
Furthermore, understanding Latin America's political boundaries and resources helps your K-12 students interpret current events and economic relationships. In an increasingly globalized world, this knowledge fosters empathy, challenges stereotypes, and prepares students to engage responsibly as citizens. Without this critical geographic literacy, your eager young learners miss a vital lens for comprehending their neighbors and the wider world.
