Teaching about the Dominican Republic is greatly rewarding because it shows K-12 students how a Caribbean nation's mountains, valleys, and coastline shape its economy and culture.
The Dominican Republic sits on the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, sharing it with Haiti. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The country has a varied landscape: the Cordillera Central mountain range, fertile valleys like the Cibao, and coastal plains. Pico Duarte is the highest peak in the Caribbean. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season and a hurricane season from June to November.
Studying the Dominican Republic builds key geographic skills. Students can explore how mountains and valleys create different farming zones for sugarcane, coffee, cocoa, and rice. They can also learn how the country's location near major shipping routes shaped its history and trade. Tourism, farming, mining, and free trade zones drive the economy. Hurricanes show how geography links to natural hazards.
The country's cultural geography blends Taíno, African, Spanish, and Caribbean influences, seen in its language, music like merengue and bachata, and foods like sancocho. For young learners, the Dominican Republic is memorable because of its beaches, mountains, and baseball players. Studying it builds map skills, cultural awareness, and understanding of how geography shapes identity in the Caribbean.
