Teaching about Saint Barthélemy is greatly beneficial because it shows K-12 students how a tiny French island in the Caribbean can blend European and tropical life in a unique way.
Saint Barthélemy, often called St. Barts, is a French overseas collectivity in the Lesser Antilles, southeast of the Virgin Islands. It is a small, hilly island surrounded by coral reefs, with white-sand beaches and a dry, sunny climate. Unlike many Caribbean islands, it has no rivers and limited fresh water, so it relies on desalination and rainwater collection.
Studying Saint Barthélemy builds key geographic skills. Students can explore how its volcanic and coral origins shaped the island and how its dry climate limits farming. They can also learn how its location in the Caribbean and its ties to France influence its culture, language, and economy. Tourism drives the economy, with luxury resorts and yachting attracting visitors from around the world. The island's reefs support diving and marine life.
The island's cultural geography blends French, African, and Caribbean influences, seen in its cuisine, music, and festivals. For young learners, Saint Barthélemy is memorable because of its beaches, reefs, and French flair. Studying it builds map skills, cultural awareness, and understanding of how geography shapes small island economies and identities in the Caribbean.
