Students are tasked with researching the state of Delaware and citing their sources. Printable worksheet that students complete while researching the state of Delaware. Delaware is a small state with a big story! Most of its land is flat coastal plain, rising no more than 80 feet above sea level. Only a tiny strip of rolling hills sits in the north. Because it is so low, about 73,000 acres of tidal wetlands cover the state, and flooding is a real concern. Today, Delaware's economy is led by finance, insurance, and real estate, which make up over 41 percent of the state's GDP. Wilmington has long been a banking hub. The state is also known for chemicals and life sciences, with companies like DuPont and Merck carrying on a long history of innovation. Healthcare and education employ nearly 130,000 people. Historically, Delaware holds a special title: it was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Before that, it was settled by Swedes in 1638, then taken over by the Dutch, and later controlled by the English. For a time, it was part of William Penn's Pennsylvania before becoming separate. Phew! This mix of early settlers and its role at the nation's founding shaped Delaware into the unique "First State" it is today. |
