Otto von Bismarck (April 1, 1815-July 30, 1898) of Prussia/Germany. Portrait by Lenbach. Bismarck dominated European politics from the 1860s until he was dismissed in 1890. The "balance of power" that he created was largely responsible for La Belle Époque ("The Beautiful Era"), the peace that existed in Europe from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 until World War I in 1914. |
