Joseph Stalin was born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili (1878) in what is now the independent country of Georgia, in the Caucasus. Stalin led the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) from, essentially, the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924, until his own death in 1953. He is reviled for his harsh rule, which saw millions die of starvation and thousands sent to gulags.
