Do you pick up books at garage sales?

Here's a funny story.  It's not exactly related to this website, but frugal educators might enjoy it.

I have a friend who isn't much of a reader.  But, like many grown-ups, she loves watching the Harry Potter films.  In anticipation of the final film's release, I was able to convince her to finally read the series.  Next on her reading list is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Like a lot of frugal educators, I love hitting up garage sales in search of bargains.  Imagine my delight when I saw The Order of the Phoenix in great condition for only 35 cents.  I swooped in up.  When I gave it to my friend, I said, "I picked this up for you for only 35 cents.  It looks like it's never been read, and the only mark on it is where the kid wrote his/her name on the front page."  My friend thanked me and opened the book.  She started reading the name..."J...K...R....o..."

Signed British First Edition Paperback Book:
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

It turns out that the book is a signed first edition paperback printed in Great Britain.  It is worth at least $250.00.  The moral of this story is...double-check the names you see written in books!  As for me, I simply hope that my friend gets me a great birthday gift this year.  The book itself is on permanent display in my friend's home.
