The illustration above is of a Puritan schoolhouse of New England in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Notice the logs used as desks, and the quill pens. Notice as well, the boy forced to stand on a chair wearing a dunce cap. Children were taught to read so that they might read the Bible.
