In 1096, Europe was a fragmented region made up of feudal kingdoms and principalities, united loosely under the influence of the Catholic Church. The Pope held significant spiritual and political power, and the Church sought to channel the military energies of European knights into a holy cause. Many nobles were eager for land, wealth, and religious salvation. Economic hardship, overpopulation, and political instability also motivated people to join the Crusade. Pope Urban II's call to reclaim the Holy Land united diverse European groups under the banner of religious warfare.
