Lord Byron, a British poet and leading figure of the Romantic movement, played a significant role in supporting Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century. Deeply moved by the Greek struggle, he used his fame and wealth to raise awareness and funds for the cause. In 1823, he traveled to Greece, where he helped finance ships and supplies for the revolutionary forces. He also worked to unite rival Greek factions and promote cooperation. Byron’s commitment to Greek freedom made him a symbol of international support for the movement. Tragically, he died of illness in Missolonghi in 1824 before seeing Greek independence achieved. His sacrifice made him a national hero in Greece and inspired further support from Europe.
