One major turning point was the Easter Rising of 1916, when Irish nationalists launched an armed rebellion in Dublin against British rule. Although the uprising was quickly suppressed, the execution of its leaders by the British government sparked public sympathy and increased support for independence. In 1919, the Irish War of Independence began, led by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and political leaders from Sinn Féin. Guerrilla warfare and political resistance targeted British forces and institutions. This conflict continued until the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed in 1921, establishing the Irish Free State as a self-governing dominion within the British Empire. However, the treaty caused a split among Irish nationalists, leading to the Irish Civil War (1922-1923) between pro- and anti-treaty forces. Eventually, the pro-treaty side prevailed, and the Irish Free State continued its path toward full sovereignty. In 1949, Ireland formally became a republic, fully independent from British rule. However, Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom, and tensions over this division continued for decades. These events reflect the broader 19th- and 20th-century nationalist movements seeking self-rule and cultural identity. |
