Over London by Rail, a print by Gustave Doré (circa 1870). This portrait of Great Britain at the start of the Second Industrial Revolution illustrates the cramped living conditions which were created as rural-to-urban migration brought displaced agricultural workers to the cities. Image from London: A Pilgrimage (1872). Life in London for the working class at this time was difficult and often harsh. Many families lived in overcrowded, unsanitary tenements with poor ventilation and limited access to clean water. Industrial jobs were demanding, with long hours, low wages, and unsafe conditions in factories or docks. Child labor was common, and access to education and healthcare was limited. Despite these challenges, working-class neighborhoods developed strong communities, and labor movements began to push for reforms. |
