Answer each of the following questions using complete sentences. 1. Why is Charlemagne an important figure in European history? Charlemagne is a pivotal figure in European history because he united much of Western and Central Europe during the early Middle Ages and was crowned Emperor of the Romans in 800 C.E. He promoted education, standardized laws, and strengthened Christianity across his empire. His reign laid the foundation for the Holy Roman Empire and helped shape the political and cultural landscape of medieval Europe. 2. Describe feudal law practices. Feudal law practices in medieval Europe were based on local customs, tradition, and the authority of lords. Justice was administered by landowning nobles who held courts on their estates. Trials often involved oaths, witnesses, or trial by ordeal or combat. There was no standardized legal system, and judgments varied widely. Loyalty and service to a lord influenced legal decisions, reflecting the decentralized nature of feudal society. 3. Describe the social inequalities of the feudal system. The feudal system created stark social inequalities, with power and wealth concentrated among the nobility and clergy. Lords owned vast lands worked by peasants and serfs, who had few rights and lived in poverty. Serfs were bound to the land and required to give a portion of their crops to their lords. Social mobility was rare, and the rigid hierarchy favored the upper classes while limiting opportunities for the lower classes. Click here to print (PDF file). Answers will vary. |
