Directions: Answer the following questions using complete sentences. Answers will vary.

1. Describe the conditions in Germany that allowed the Protestant Reformation to be successful there.

Germany's fragmented political structure, with many semi-independent states, allowed the Protestant Reformation to thrive. Local rulers, like Frederick the Wise, protected reformers such as Martin Luther from Church and imperial authority. Additionally, widespread dissatisfaction with Church corruption, the influence of humanist ideas, and the use of the printing press helped spread reformist messages quickly and widely across German territories.

2. What were the goals of the Protestant Reformation?

The goals of the Protestant Reformation were to reform the Roman Catholic Church by addressing corruption, such as the sale of indulgences, and to return to a more personal, scripture-based faith. Reformers sought to challenge papal authority, promote salvation through faith alone, and make the Bible accessible to all believers. Ultimately, they aimed to reshape religious practice and restore spiritual integrity.

3. How did the English Reformation differ from the Protestant Reformation elsewhere?

The English Reformation differed from the broader Protestant Reformation because it was driven more by political motives than religious ones. King Henry VIII initiated it to gain control over the Church and secure an annulment the Pope refused. This led to the creation of the Church of England, with the monarch as its head. Unlike reforms elsewhere, it began with royal authority, not theological disputes.
