Students are tasked with researching the state of Maine and citing their sources. This PDF worksheet is designed for students in grades five and up. Maine is a state shaped by its natural resources, from its rocky coast to its vast forests. Tourism is a huge part of the economy, drawing millions of visitors who come for the scenery and outdoor activities. In recent years, the state has welcomed over 13 million visitors who spent billions of dollars, supporting tens of thousands of jobs across the state. People are drawn to Maine's iconic coastline, sandy beaches, and mountains for hiking and fishing. Historically, Maine's economy was built on what the land and sea provided. For centuries, the forest products industry drove the economy, with Maine's tall white pines even used as ship masts. Fishing and shipbuilding were also major early industries, with Maine shipyards producing a large share of the nation's ships in the 1800s. Today, manufacturing remains important, employing over 56,000 workers in fields like paper, boat building, and electronics. The state is also famous for producing 90% of the nation's lobster supply. Maine became the 23rd state in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise. Long before that, the land was home to the Wabanaki people. The state also played a notable role in the Civil War, providing more soldiers per capita to the Union cause than any other state. |
