Pupils are tasked with researching the state of New Hampshire and citing their sources. This worksheet is designed for students in grades five and up.
New Hampshire, known as the Granite State, blends outdoor adventure with a strong colonial history. Tourism is the state's second-largest industry, drawing millions of visitors each year. In 2023, over 14 million people visited, spending more than $7.3 billion and supporting over 70,000 jobs. People come for the White Mountains, the Lakes Region, and the Seacoast, with skiing, hiking, and fall foliage being major draws.
The state's economy is diverse. Healthcare is the largest employment sector, while professional and technical services are growing fast. Manufacturing remains important, employing about 68,800 people in fields like electronics and machinery. Tourism and hospitality also play a big role, especially in restaurants and lodging.
Historically, New Hampshire is one of the original thirteen colonies, first settled by Europeans in 1623 at Portsmouth and Dover. It was the first colony to declare independence from Britain and the ninth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. The state's motto, "Live Free or Die," comes from Revolutionary War General John Stark, reflecting its independent spirit.
