Your pupils must not only research the state, but cite their sources. Colorado is a state of big mountains and wide open plains. The Rocky Mountains run right through the middle, with over 50 peaks taller than 14,000 feet. The eastern part of the state is flat grassland that stretches for miles. This mix of high mountains and flat plains shapes how people live and work here. Farming and ranching are huge in Colorado! Cattle and calves are the number one farm product, worth over $4 billion. Dairy, corn, wheat, and hay are also important. Colorado leads the nation in growing proso millet, a grain used in birdseed and gluten-free foods. The state has nearly 39,000 farms and ranches covering almost half its land. Colorado's economy today is also powered by technology, tourism, and energy. Skiing brings visitors from around the world, and the state is a hub for tech companies. In 2023, Colorado ranked fourth in oil production and eighth in natural gas. Historically, Native American tribes like the Ute and Cheyenne lived here for thousands of years. In 1858, gold was discovered near Denver, sparking the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Colorado became the 38th state in 1876, exactly 100 years after the Declaration of Independence—which is why it's called the Centennial State. |
