Idaho is a state of mountains, rivers, and wide open spaces. The Rocky Mountains run through the middle of the state, with deep canyons like Hells Canyon along the western border. The Snake River Plain cuts across southern Idaho, and farmers use water from the Snake River to grow crops in this dry region. Farming is a huge part of Idaho's economy. The state is number one in the country for potatoes, barley, alfalfa hay, peppermint oil, and trout. Idaho grows about 30% of the nation's potatoes. Dairy is also the state's top farm product by revenue. In recent years, technology companies have grown fast, especially around Boise, where Micron Technology is a major employer. Historically, Native American tribes lived in Idaho for thousands of years, including the Nez Perce, Shoshone-Bannock, and Coeur d'Alene. Lewis and Clark explored the region in 1805. In 1860, gold was discovered at Orofino Creek, bringing miners to the area. Idaho became a territory in 1863 and the 43rd state on July 3, 1890. Students are tasked with researching the state and citing their sources. This notebooking page is designed for students in grades five and up. |
