This is designed for students in grades five and up. Pupils research the state of Rhode Island and cite their sources.

Minnesota's geography is shaped by ancient ice. Glaciers left behind rolling hills, flat plains, and thousands of lakes. In the north, the land is rocky and forested, while the south has rich farmland. The state's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes," is actually an undercount—there are more than 11,000! The Mississippi River begins in northern Minnesota at Itasca State Park and flows through the state. Along the northeast edge, Lake Superior's rocky North Shore creates dramatic cliffs and waterfalls.

Industries in Minnesota are diverse and strong. The state is a leader in health care and life sciences, home to the Mayo Clinic and many medical device companies. Advanced manufacturing is also huge, with companies like 3M and Medtronic calling Minnesota home. Food and agriculture matter too—large companies like General Mills and Hormel—are based there, and the state exports food products worldwide. Mining also plays a role, especially iron ore in the north.

Tourism brings millions of visitors and supports many jobs. Summer is the busiest season, when people flock to lakes for boating, fishing, and cabin life. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area offers wilderness paddling, while Voyageurs National Park is the only water-based national park in the U.S.. In the Twin Cities, visitors enjoy museums, theaters, and the Mall of America. The Minnesota State Fair draws huge crowds each August. In winter, hardy travelers try ice fishing and snowmobiling.

From glacial lakes to cutting-edge medicine, Minnesota's geography and economy are closely linked.
