The Wars of the Roses (1455-1485)
The Wars of the Roses were fought in Calais, England, and Wales. The contestants were the House of York (represented by the white rose) and the House of Lancaster (represented by the red rose), both branches of the House of Plantagenet.
A Lancastrian claimant, Henry Tudor, defeated the last Yorkist king Richard III, winning the English throne. Henry Tudor (now Henry VII) married Edward IV's daughter, Elizabeth of York, in order to unite the two houses. The House of Tudor went on to rule England and Wales for 117 years, ending with the death of Elizabeth I.
