Missouri is a state in the American Midwest with a varied landscape of plains, rolling hills, forests, and river valleys. The Missouri River crosses the state, while the Mississippi River forms much of its eastern border. These waterways have influenced settlement, transportation, and trade throughout Missouri's history. The Ozark Plateau covers much of the southern part of the state and features wooded hills, caves, springs, and rocky landscapes. Northern Missouri has flatter land and fertile soils that support farming.

Missouri has a diverse economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, mining, and tourism. Farmers grow corn, soybeans, and other crops, while cattle and hog farming support the livestock industry. Manufacturing includes food products, machinery, transportation equipment, and other goods. Missouri's central location makes it an important transportation hub, with highways, railroads, and rivers connecting businesses to markets across the country. Visitors also support the economy by exploring attractions such as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Branson’s entertainment centers, and the Lake of the Ozarks.

Missouri's history reflects the growth and change of the United States. Indigenous peoples lived in the region long before European explorers arrived. French settlers established communities during the colonial period, and the area later became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Missouri joined the Union as the twenty-fourth state in 1821. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 made the state's admission part of a major national debate over slavery. During the Civil War, Missouri experienced divided loyalties and conflict. After the war, farming, industry, and transportation helped the state grow.

Today, Missouri's landscape, industries, and history continue to shape its communities and economy. Studying these connections helps students understand how geography influences human activity and historical change.
