Maryland packs a lot of variety into a small state, from the mountains in the west to the beaches along the Atlantic. Tourism is a major economic driver. In 2023, the state welcomed over 45 million visitors who spent $20.5 billion. People are drawn to the Chesapeake Bay, historic sites like Fort McHenry (where "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written), and the National Aquarium in Baltimore, which is a top attraction. The state also promotes its deep connection to the Underground Railroad and its scenic byways.
Industries in Maryland are diverse. The state is a hub for professional and technical services, fueled by the many federal agencies located there, like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Manufacturing is also important, especially in computer and electronics, food, and chemicals, employing thousands of workers. Healthcare and education are among the largest employers as well.
Historically, Maryland is one of the original thirteen colonies, founded in 1634 as a haven for English Catholics. It played a crucial role in the Civil War; the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, took place on its soil. The state also has a strong legacy of innovation, being home to the first U.S. railroad (the B&O) and the first telegraph line.
