Pupils research the state and cite their sources. West Virginia is known as the "Mountain State" because it is covered in mountains and has no flat plains. Most of the state is part of the Appalachian Plateau, with rolling hills and deep valleys. The eastern part has long, folded mountain ridges and valleys. This rugged land shaped how people lived and worked. The state's economy has long been tied to its natural resources. West Virginia is the second-largest coal producer in the country. Coal mining has been a major industry for many years. The state also has rich forests covering more than 75 percent of its land. Farming includes apples, peaches, beef, and poultry. Historically, West Virginia was once part of Virginia. During the Civil War, the western counties did not want to leave the Union. They separated and became their own state in 1863. The mountains made travel hard, but they also gave the state its strong identity and breathtakingly beautiful scenery. |
